Dental Bridges
Procedure Description
A dental bridge is a time-tested fixed prosthetic device that has remained fundamentally unchanged for over 150 years. The procedure involves preparing both adjacent teeth to the missing tooth site - these prepared teeth are called abutments and serve as the "legs" of the bridge, supporting a three or more unit fixed prosthesis. The dentist prepares the teeth on either side of the gap, takes precise impressions, and has a custom bridge fabricated that includes replacement teeth (pontics) fused between two crowns. The bridge is then permanently cemented into place, filling the gap and restoring your complete smile.
Indications
Dental bridges are an excellent solution for replacing missing teeth and restoring oral function. They're recommended when:
When to Consider Dental Bridges
One or More Missing Teeth
Gaps in your smile that affect appearance, eating, and speaking.
Adjacent Healthy Teeth
The teeth on either side of the gap are strong enough to support the bridge.
Preventing Teeth Shifting
Missing teeth can cause surrounding teeth to drift into the empty space, leading to bite problems.
Maintaining Facial Structure
Tooth loss can lead to bone deterioration and changes in facial appearance.
Restored Bite Function
Missing teeth can cause uneven pressure distribution and excessive wear on remaining teeth.
Note: If the adjacent teeth don't need crowns or have significant damage, dental implants might be a better option as they don't require altering healthy tooth structure.
Benefits
Why Choose Dental Bridges?
Fast Turnaround
Can be accomplished within a 10-day turnaround, from start to completion.
Suitable for Most Patients
A patient's medical history almost never limits their choice to have a dental bridge.
Long-Lasting Solution
As long as the bridge is done correctly and the patient has decent hygiene, there is no foreseeable need to replace the bridge.
Fixed Solution
Unlike removable partial dentures, bridges are permanently cemented and feel like natural teeth.
Restored Function
Regain the ability to chew properly and speak clearly without gaps in your smile.
Natural Appearance
Custom-crafted to match your natural teeth in color, size, and shape for seamless integration.
Prevents Tooth Movement
Fills the gap to prevent adjacent teeth from shifting out of position.
Alternatives
Dental Implants
Most natural-feeling replacement that doesn't affect adjacent teeth, but more expensive
Partial Dentures
Removable option that's less expensive but may be less comfortable
Implant-Supported Bridge
Bridge anchored to implants instead of natural teeth
