Dental Sealants

Procedure Description

Dental sealants are arguably one of the most underrated procedures in dentistry. This non-invasive procedure involves applying a protective coating to virgin, cavity-free molar and premolar teeth. The dentist and his associate dentists first clean the tooth surface, then etch it to create a better bonding surface. A liquid dental filling is then painted over the grooves—similar to how caulking is applied in home bathrooms. This protective layer covers the grooves, pits, and fissures of the molars and premolars, preventing sugars and cavity-causing bacteria from harboring in these hard-to-reach areas. The entire process is quick, painless, and requires no drilling or anesthesia, making it an ideal preventive treatment for both children and adults.

Indications

Dental sealants are a highly effective preventive treatment recommended for:

When to Consider Dental Sealants

Children and Teens

Permanent molars should be sealed as soon as they erupt (around ages 6 and 12) to protect during cavity-prone years.

Deep Grooves and Pits

Teeth with pronounced fissures that trap food particles and bacteria, making them difficult to clean.

Cavity-Prone Patients

Adults at higher risk for decay due to deep grooves, difficulty with oral hygiene, or history of frequent cavities.

Baby Teeth

Primary molars with deep grooves in children who are at high risk for early childhood cavities.

Note: Sealants are most effective on teeth without existing decay or fillings. They're a preventive measure, not a treatment for existing cavities.

Benefits

Why Choose Dental Sealants?

Highly Effective Prevention

Reduces risk of cavities by up to 80% in molars, making it one of the best ways to prevent dental caries in both children and adults.

Easier Hygiene Maintenance

Sealants create a smooth surface that makes proper hygiene significantly easier to maintain, especially for young children who may struggle with thorough brushing.

Quick and Painless

Application takes only a few minutes per tooth with no drilling, shots, or discomfort.

Long-Lasting Protection

Sealants typically last around 3 years, providing reliable protection during critical cavity-prone years. They're monitored at regular checkups and can be reapplied as needed.

Cost-Effective

Much less expensive than fillings and other cavity treatments.

Safe and Proven

Sealants have been used successfully for decades and are recommended by the American Dental Association.

Alternatives

Fluoride Treatments

Strengthens enamel but doesn't physically protect grooves from decay

Preventive Resin Restorations

Minimal filling material placed in grooves, requires some tooth preparation

Regular Hygiene Only

Relying solely on brushing and flossing is less effective for protecting deep grooves
